The Unit of Distinction program is a voluntary, honor-based initiative that celebrates excellence in leadership, engagement, and service among our local IRTA units. It serves as both a roadmap for effective unit management and a way to spotlight those going above and beyond to support our mission and members.

The Units of Distinction recognition program is designed to celebrate and highlight local units that demonstrate excellence in leadership, communication, member engagement, and alignment with the mission of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association (IRTA). Strong local units serve as the backbone of the organization, fostering meaningful connections among members while advancing advocacy efforts and promoting the well-being of retired educators.

The application and submission period for Units of Distinction will be open annually from October 1 through December 31. An electronic submission link will be provided to local units prior to the opening date; however, submissions will not be accepted before October 1. Local units are encouraged to complete and submit their materials within the designated timeframe to be considered for recognition.

By completing this evaluation, local units not only demonstrate their qualifications for recognition but also engage in meaningful self-assessment. This process helps identify best practices, encourages continuous improvement, and supports IRTA’s commitment to maintaining a strong, unified voice for retired educators across the state.

Units that meet or exceed these standards exemplify dedication, collaboration, and service—qualities that define a true Unit of Distinction.
